چکیده

Prior work has shown the utility of syntactic tree fragments as features in judging the grammaticality of text. To date such fragments have been extracted from derivations of Bayesianinduced Tree Substitution Grammars (TSGs). Evaluating on discriminative coarse and fine grammaticality classification tasks, we show that a simple, deterministic, count-based approach to fragment identification performs on par with the more complicated grammars of Post (2011). This represents a significant reduction in complexity for those interested in the use of such fragments in the development of systems for the educational domain.

Judging Grammaticality with Tree Substitution Grammar Derivations

In this paper, we show that local features computed from the derivations of tree substitution grammars — such as the identify of particular fragments, and a count of large and small fragments — are useful in binary grammatical classification tasks. Such features outperform n-gram features and various model scores by a wide margin. Although they fall short of the performance of the hand-crafted ...

Alternating Regular Tree Grammars in the Framework of Lattice-Valued Logic

In this paper, two different ways of introducing alternation for lattice-valued (referred to as {L}valued)  regular tree grammars and {L}valued top-down tree automata are compared. One is the way which defines the alternating regular tree grammar, i.e., alternation is governed by the non-terminals of the grammar and the other is the way which combines state with alternation. The first way is ta...

Beauty and the Beast: What running a broad-coverage precision grammar over the BNC taught us about the grammar — and the corpus

Introduction Typically, broad-coverage precision grammars are based on grammaticality judgment data and syntactic intuition, and corpus data is relegated to secondary status in guiding lexicon and grammar development. On the other end of the scale, shallow grammars are often induced directly from treebank data and make little or no use of grammaticality judgments or intuition. This tends to cau...

A Tree Transducer Model for Synchronous Tree-Adjoining Grammars

A characterization of the expressive power of synchronous tree-adjoining grammars (STAGs) in terms of tree transducers (or equivalently, synchronous tree substitution grammars) is developed. Essentially, a STAG corresponds to an extended tree transducer that uses explicit substitution in both the input and output. This characterization allows the easy integration of STAG into toolkits for exten...

Node-based Induction of Tree-Substitution Grammars

Traditionally, syntactic parsing is done using probabilistic context-free grammars (PCFGs) or variants thereof, as there are standard efficient methods for parsing with PCFGs and for extracting them from a corpus. However, PCFGs do not accurately represent many dependencies in natural language. For example, many determiners can only occur with certain types of nouns. Determiners like a and anot...
